You are right about "disgustful" being an adjective, but it is used in different cases than "disgusting". It is hard for me to describe the exact difference between the two.. I think it is based on what you mean by "disgust". For physical disgust, like if something smells or tastes bad, you use "disgusting". I think "disgustful" is used more for ideas and actions.. like a teacher sleeping with his student would be considered "disgustful". It is for the more psychological form of disgust, I think.

I apologize that this is all explained poorly, I have really never had to analyze the difference before. It was just that hearing a drink referred to as "disgustful" sounded wrong to me, as a native English speaker.
