And you should teach your Russian friends to speak English so I know what they're saying here. ;-)

Oh Vriad, don't go all American on me and make out you don't know irony when you see it...

Meanwhile, in another thread...

it's not irony, it's mild playful bullying, if anything! also, i know why you hate america - they begot six apart!!! and of course studying new languages is fun, it's like internalizing new mentality - that person is right - i thought it was a common fact. except, i don't agree that reading is the simplest part. to read and understand what you read correctly, you need to know grammar, and as soon as you've understood a piece of grammar, you basically can use it. a-ha-ha-ha, a-ha-ha-ha (collapses in an epileptic seizure)

i thought it was a common fact.

Not here in NZ, as second languages are rare - except for immigrants and those who've bothered to learn Maori. The only other country near us is English-speaking Australia, so, unfortunately, we've little actual need to learn other languages.

But I don't hate America. The irony comment was due to the assumption talked about here...

Yeah. I think some hit the nail on the head in the comments when they said it's just that Americans don't pepper their speech with irony and humour, unlike most other English-speaking countries - and probably Russians too? "Americans are straight-talkers" probably sums it up.

The US is still a very strange country though. I've been buying quite a bit on eBay of late, and it's kinda odd to get a 'God bless you' amongst business correspondence...

i'd say that since no nation is homogeneous, you can only talk about national types, and then of course there are various russian types which are very humorless in specific russian ways, as well as there are recognizable hill-silly hill-billies from america, or say those bland, insipid, docile, disgusting europeans. but! i have to admit that you're about the only nz type i know.

And I'm certainly not representative of a New Zealander. I don't drink, for starters, which puts me outside of the mainstream straight away.

A few of our 'types': West Coasters, who live on the West Coast of the South Island and are generally considered to be more down to earth, tough and individualistic than the rest of us. And South Islanders in general are considered to be more conservative than North Islanders, while Aucklanders are considered more money-obsessed than the rest of us. (I'm none of those, hence part of 'the rest of us'.)

Then there's Maori, (the indigenous race here), who're seen as more easy-going in a typical Polynesian kind of way. (When not demanded stolen land back and such.) Plus there's a lot of other Pacific Islanders here too, (Auckland being the city with the world's largest Polynesian population), and a lot of Asians now as well. We used to be a very white country made up mostly of descendants from the UK, but that's changed quite fast of late, with not too much friction so far, happily.

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] nelen and [livejournal.com profile] jolly_oddness are comparing Australia and Russia over here...

I doubt I want to live in Seberia, (unless Natasha's part of the package;), though I'd be interested in knowing what an 'izbushka' is?

Have you researched the West Coast? If not, try here...

Izbuska's are cute! If you have to live neck-deep in snow, that's the way to do it.

I could never forget Natasha!

I'm behind in my LJing though, so her celebrityness is news to me, though I noticed mice on display as I skimmed back through LJ a night or two ago, so maybe that's what's caught the nation's attention?

You mean the Gannet? Not in the flesh, err, or feathers, they don't, their heads being about as big as a canary... Oh, you meant the islands, right? :-)

Overpopulated by tourists? How many people did you see on the beaches?

Actually, I wouldn't know, but I wouldn't think it's too bad. It's not warm and doesn't have any ski-resorts (as far as I know), so that would weed out the most obnoxious tourists.

the most obnoxious tourists are beach people. ski people keep to their slopes most of the time, if you ain't some sort of meandering alpinist they are harmless, besides they get their limbs broken as a punishment, pretty often too, i know because my cuzn is into extreme sports. and what about those sea-clogging half-assed nudists? do you think they drown half as often?

well. my ego's already trampled down by my superego and half-corroded by my suppressed&repressed ID. when i finally finish this year-long epopee and receive 1.5 comments, that will be le coup de grâce to my ego, right? i'd better not finish it at all!

'epopee'? Now I'm supposed to learn French as well as Russian!?

I'm sorry, but English is good enough for anyone you know!

But your epopee will be wonderful and a huge success! What Intolerance was to the movies, Sgt. Pepper was to recorded music and the pushup bra was to fashion, so your epopee will prove to be to animation. Your ego will be popping out of every orifice you have, you'll see!
