т.е. "Кто бы мог подумать"? этот вопрос возник на ru_translate (http://www.livejournal.com/community/ru_translate/4476498.html?style=mine), и там предложили как раз такой вариант, но я почему-то засомневалась
I wish I understood Russian so I knew if someone already responded correctly, but "what are the odds" is about how the writer feels that her emotions are unlikely, or "not probable", or just unexpected.
A literal translation would sound pretty funny, no doubt.
i don't read russian, so i'm not sure if this has been explained fully yet, but it's a vague reference to gambling. odds are what percentage someone or something is likely win an event or game or something like that.
for instance, if there is a horse race the horse that everyone thinks is going to win has the best odds. the horse that the fewest amount of people think is going to win has the worst odds.
for example 'my horse broke its leg but still won the race. what are the odds?'
'what are the odds' is like saying that an event had small chances of happening. so when someone says "I miss him like my heart has been torn from my chest. What are the odds?," the writer is saying that they are surprised that they feel that way about 'him' because the odds were not great for them to feel that way.
