why did you call your dog laika? in russian, it sounds almost like лайка (husky)

yes...i named her after laika the dog who was sent into space on sputnik 2.

i heard this amazing piece of music that used the tapes of laika's heartbeat....it was so sad.
doesn't laika also mean "barker" as well as a breed of husky? my dog is a whippet and isn't supposed to bark much, but she sure does bark a lot! i figure i got what i asked for by naming her that.

that's right, layat' [pronounced as in lie] means 'to bark' in russian. and 'a' in laika is also pronounced that way, not like in 'lake'

yes, here in america, whenever i tell people my dog is named laika, they ask me if i named her after the leica cameras! :)
