I may go for some transiberian experience this summer, from Beijing to Moscow, along with parents and little brother. Little brother happens to be black, will he get stoned to death or does he have a decent chance to survive ?
well, what can i say? it should be safe, although when i see blacks in moscow, they very often look uncomfortable. but actual acts of violence are rare i think. i don't know, walking around balashikha/moscow i never run into nazi mobs. ps. you damn travellers. i'm envious!
Well, you know better than i i suppose. The story about those black dudes who got stabbed in Piter a couple of weeks ago made me wonder wether it was really that good of an idea to take him with us. He's just one dull western teen, grown up in french countryside and not really prepared to get hostile looks from people. It'd be a pity for him to miss that sino-russian experience though, travels, that's one of these rare things which make life worthy it seems to me.
As an anecdote, i remember being amusingly shocked in Piter seeing russian ladies working as municipal worker to clean the streets and empty public bins - as i only noticed then, it seems the only persons who are willing to do that in France are arabs and africans (which indeed has a sickening déjà-vu smell of slavery and exploitation). And i certainly was not prepared to see gorgeous blond top models do that in the streets of Piter =)
black people are very rare in mowscow and peter, let alone the rest of russia, that's the problem. so he might feel uncomfortable - or he might not. i've never been a black person in russia, so i can only guess. there are some working areas occupied mainly by foreigners, for example construction workers are mostly from former soviet republics. i never heard about the stabbings. i haven't watched tv or read newspapers for a few years, and it all goes unnoticed past me.
Of course the amusing thing there is that in our untrained western eyes it is not easy to tell the difference between typical russian profiles - if that only exists provided the undecent size of the country - and the average chechen or tadjik dude.
