i think they mostly live in south asia and africa, but are very popular here as cage birds. i don't know what they are called in english - either queleas or finches or something else. there are many different subspecies. in russian these are called 'japanese amadinas', and these http://vriad-lee.livejournal.com/12019.html -- 'zebra amadinas', and these http://vriad-lee.livejournal.com/35642.html are 'rice birds'. they are all related.
