colours look like from some soviet illustrated stuff - say, ОГОНЁК. i always attributed it to the printing problems - and was wrong as i see ;P

these colours are due to strong overexposure mainly. yeah, they were sickly sovok in soviet times, and now it's vintage!
but i think you weren't wrong: it's the same effect (as in low-quality printing) achieved in a different way.
