I love the photos of the woods among the last ones. How's the effect achieved? (Meaning the darker edges, etc.)

They remind me of the photos produced by a cheap Asian-made (I think) camera that has something of a cult following. (But I can't remember its name.)
And, (slightly off-topic), I've just read this...
