Yeah you got that right. 40 years of Democrat Party Rule/Socialism in New Orleans was proven to be a wrong headed idea. The overwhelming suffering and despair of the poor was "In Your Face" proof of that. But hey, one never learns, there is now talk of giving everyone a check of $100,000 to help them get back on their feet. Ummmmmm, maybe I am being hard, but I doubt if those that are possibly going to receive such a check even had 2 cents in savings or possessions to begin with before the Hurricane struck. Oh well . . . the cycle will continue I guess. I'd wager that the majority of those that receive such an amount will not have much if any of it to show within a year of receiving it. Anyway . . .
That being said, America the great has spent and is spending billions to get Iraq rebuilt, and when something happens here we are all supposed to blame those who didn't have the resources in the first place.
At the same time you bring up an interesting point about measurement of damages. You claim, "I doubt if those that are possibly going to receive such a check even had 2 cents in savings or possessions to begin with," so you are only considering the value of possessions as damage. I am uncertain that we can measure all damages this way. There is a certain value to a person's employment. In fact, this is well-recognized with insurance programs, such as disability insurance and unemployment programs. America has long recognized "pain and suffering" in economic terms, but "pain and suffering" is not exactly measured based on "savings or possessions."
By no means do I know what a perfect solution might look like. I am not suggesting that "giving everyone a check of $100,000" is a good solution either, but at the same time I question the basic function of government if it is not for protection and safety. Why do I as a citizen want "fire and police protection." There is no way that any one citizen can be prepared for major disasters. In some third-world countries there are gangs and unsanctioned military organizations to provide "protection," and I hope we never have to resort to that in America.
Whether you want to admit it or not, much like homelessness, it's a difficult situation for everyone in America.
"Are you suggesting that Katrina hit because of the political party in power? You would not be the first."
Huh ? Where in the world did you get that idea ? What I was saying I believe was quite evident. And that is simply that the welfare/Socialist policies of the Democrat Party in New Orleans did nothing to alleviate the poor/homeless other than to have their numbers grow with each generation as well as to condition people in their circumstance(s) to rely on Government to sustain them and to bail them out instead of relying on their own abilities and will. Anyway, I made my point, whether you or anyone else agrees or not to the cold hard facts that was exposed for all to see on National/Worldwide Television.
To quote you, "40 years of Democrat Party Rule/Socialism in New Orleans was proven to be a wrong headed idea." I can only take that you suggest that Katrina would not have been so bad had a different political party been in New Orleans. If you believe it is "quite evident," then please explain what is going on in my head when I read it.
That being said, I saw the suffering. I saw the home videos. I have heard the national radio programs. I have read news reports. I have read LJ journals about it. I have reviewed the American Red Cross response. I have read, watched, considered, the whole situation.
I have even heard claims that the storm hit because the people in that area are poor, black, homosexual, and the like. I have also heard claims that the government, including President Bush, didn't take an interest soon enough because of the "value" of the people involved.
I also read that you placed a certain economic value of about 2 cents to each person.
There are so many dead people that it will be years, if ever, before the identity of the people killed will be known. We have children searching for parents, and vice versa. If my child were to come up missing, I would call the police, not the American Red Cross, but maybe I should rethink who to call after seeing what happened.
Yes, I did listen. Yes, I did read. Yes, I did watch.
