We Real Cool

THE POOL PLAYERS.
SEVEN AT THE GOLDEN SHOVEL.

We real cool. We
Left school. We

Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We

Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We

Jazz June. We
Die soon.

about african-american identity... sort of.
it's been banned for a while for having the word "jazz" in it. they thought it was inappropriate, but the author just referred to the music.

ah, i see. why SEVEN AT THE GOLDEN SHOVE? also, if 'Jazz' refers to the music, then what 'Jazz June' means? i thought june was a girl they 'jazzed'.

WHO ARE SEVEN PLAYERS??? - don't know

To be honest, I have no idea. It also seems to be not just about African-Americans, but about rebellious youth in general...

From somewhere:
"This poem describes the lifestyle of young rebels. They are "cool," having "left school," and enjoy themselves being bad. Although this gang is busy living life, they also realize that they "die soon."

the boys i mean are not refined
by e e cummings

The boys i mean are not refined
They go with girls who buck and bite
They do not give a fuck for luck
They hump them thirteen times a night

One hangs a hat upon her tit
One carves a cross on her behind
They do not give a shit for wit
The boys i mean are not refined

They come with girls who bite and buck
Who cannot read and cannot write
Who laugh like they would fall apart
And masturbate with dynamite

The boys i mean are not refined
They cannot chat of that and this
They do not give a fart for art
They kill like you would take a piss

They speak whatever's on their mind
They do whatever's in their pants
The boys i mean are not refined
They shake the mountains when they dance

I think it's just evoking summer nights listening to music and hangin' out on the streets. But that could be too literal...
