I know that burying people with their heads sticking out is an old torture method. In ancient times people used to be left buried in the desert with only their heads sticking out, left to die and be eaten by vultures, or eaten alive. Also, Atilla the Hun made a romping good time of burying the people of a city he conquered in a field with only their heads sticking out. He would then run through the "head patch" on his horse with great giant sticks, whacking the heads off of their former bodies. Probably resembled a modern day polo match, just more blood and less pastels.
