Magpies are amazing! Ours was named Gloucester, and he had a vast vocabulary. I loved him and miss him. My mother had to have him euthanized because he was getting old. He was 18!!! Vera is lucky to have you. She might stick around after you set her free. She'll pick up words, too, I bet!
ah, i confused magpie with jackdaw! my favored birds are jackdaws, i love their crazy eyes.but magpies are wonderful. i've never seen them very close though. did you keep him in a cage?
yes, Jackdaws are interesting birds! We don't have them in the Western hemisphere. this is what our magpie looked like--he was a special kind only found in calfornia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow-billed_Magpie yes, he was in a cage, because we always had cats! his cage was very large, though. his parents abandoned him before he was weaned, and he was stuck in a tree. he literally fell into a net i was holding underneath him, from exhaustion. he didn't know how to fly. i had to hand-feed him until he got older, but we couldn't release him because he didn't know how to survive in the wild. he was amazing--very smart and sweet.
