тоже from-long-ago

ты ли девушка моя
с длинною косой
на лужайке у пруда
в полдень золотой
грелась, ножки подобрав
и глядела вглубь
где у илистого дна
словно круглый рубь
молодой карась сверкал
лунной чушуей
и играя забавлял
тихий разум твой

Ah, the wonders of machine translation...

Too from-long-ago

Whether you my girl
With dlinnoju slanting
On a lawn at a pond
At midday gold
It was heated, legs having picked up
Also looked deep into
Where at an oozy bottom
As if round rub
The young crucian sparkled
Lunar chushuej
And playing amused
Silent your reason

And it helps that I've discovered that crucian are a type of carp...

dlinnoju slanting??? what the hell is THAT?

It was heated, legs having picked up
Also looked deep into
Where at an oozy bottom

now you know that it's about sex at least

Sex? Featuring carp? Well okay - whatever turns you on...

As to "dlinnoju", a search for the word found this...

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pat.richmonds/mhfs.htm

The song "Those Were The Days" is an english version of the russian song "Dorogoj dlinnoju".

So, is "dlinnoju" a Russian word or not? And do you know that song? Either version...

The English version and its singer (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pat.richmonds/gallery.htm) were very popular too, for a little while in the 60s.

Do they have the same tune?

Well you're the one who should know, what with stealing bits of it for "your" poem!

The lyrics to the English version were by Gene Raskin, but it seems it is acknowledged as a Russian traditional...

well, i was making fun of you, it's not jewish. but if call stealing one word (long) stealing, then call me a stealer by all means. you see, i was telling about a long braid in my poem, not a long ROAD!

Yes, tune means music, or near enough. Which means it's definately the same song then.

Not a stupid question. It's me who's totally lost in the Russian words! I've enjoyed the discussion though.
